The city of North Bay is known as "The Gateway to the North". Both Trans-Canada highways meet in North Bay. Highway 11--Yonge Street--the world's longest main street, takes travelers North and South. While Highway 17--the Voyager Route--takes travelers East and West.
There are large shopping malls and an attractive downtown core, with cobbled road, and an extensive variety of dining facilities to suit every taste.
North Bay offers excellent sporting facilities and a wide range of activities in which to partake. The three Arenas within the city are the Pete Palangio Arena, the West Ferris Community Center and the Memorial Gardens Sports Arena.
Parks and Recreation
Fishing at Trout Lake (trout, muskie, pike, perch and bass)
Fishing at Lake Nipissing (pickeral, pike, muskie and white fish)
Lee Park, off Memorial Drive, features the famous "Gateway to the North" arch, erected in 1928, to divide Southern Ontario from Northern Ontario. A CF-100 fighter plane is mounted--the last Canadian aircraft designed and built by the Canadian Air Force.
Near the children's playground is a steam locomotive, one of the last to be used by the Ontario Northland Railway. Lee Park is also the site of the North Bay Heritage Festival.
Scenic Outdoor Spots
Nature trails fan out from North Bay's Education Center. During the summer, ducks and Canadian geese use the college pond behind the complex. the trails offer scenic wooded areas, creeks, plenty of wildlife, rustic wooden bridges, picnic shelters, and kilometers of unspoiled natural beauty.
The North Bay Waterfront is a great place to walk, inline skate, or jog. It is close to the downtown, and provides marina facilities, boat launching, a bicycle path, walkway, playground, beach, picnic areas, bandshell, all along a landscaped stretch of lake Nipissing shore line. The Heritage Railway company Miniature Train runs all summer long.

Moored at the Government Dock on North Bay's beautiful waterfront is the popular cruise vessel, the New Chief. The ship is a 300 passenger, all aluminum, twin hull vessel. It has three decks. Daily cruises on majestic Lake Nipissing offer breathtaking sunsets and a historical adventure of the lake's rich Native history.
Also moored at the waterfront is the Old Chief, the predecessor and original Mipissing cruise vessel. Recently restored into a lakeside restaurant, renamed the Old Chief Fish House & Patio Bar.
Lake Nipissing Circle tour is an interesting, well designed, family drive through the history and geography of the Lake Nipissing Basin. the route completely circles the lake and passes through such significant areas as north Bay, Callander, the South Shore of lake Nipissing, Nipissing Village, Loring/Restoule, Lost Channel, across the French River, through Nonetville, Lavigne, Verner, Cache Bay, Sturgeon Falls, and along the North Shore of the lake, forming a continuous loop.
